This is one of the first series I ever watched. The anime is awesome and from what I've seen the manga is even better (I haven' read the whole series). Yuu Watase has the most beautiful characters designs I have ever seen. Miaka and Yui, two high school girls are reading an old book when they are sucked into the universe of the four gods. Miaka becomes the priestess of Suzaku and Yui of Seiryuu and they travel around this alternate universe that looks a lot like ancient China. This manga has amazing characters, amazing story, lots of romance, fighting and comedy. Excellent as you'd expect from Yuu Watase.

Ooh one of my favourite mangas and its incomplete too that is how good this is! The story is a little hard to explain and do justice too but I'll try. The setting is Korea with a monarchy system. The prince (seja) is told he must marry and proposes to a girl at school, she rejects him because she doesn't want the burden of being the princess and his family decides to go ahead with an arranged marriage. The chosen fiance is a grandaughter of the prince's grandfather's only friend (confusing huh?). Anyway it just happens that the chosen fiance is a commoner that attends the same school as the seja and witnessed the prince's proposal and rejection :) Its a great story and you absolutely have to read it!! Everything about this manwha is perfect so far.
Hana Yori Dango: shoujo, romance, comedy (36 volumes)

Known as Boys Over Flowers in english is now released by Viz comics I think. Anyway this is my all time favourite manga and anime. The anime cuts out considerable amounts of the story but is still worth watching. This series is hilarious and incredibly moving. Although its definitely a shoujo comedy this manga gets very serious at some points and the character depth really pulls you into this story. Makino Tsukushi attends school at the prestigious Eitoku Academy which is ruled over by a group of four of the richest most powerful boys in the school who are childhood friends and call themselves the F4. The F4 terrorise the students and anyone who is given the 'red card' (literally) is bullied until they are forced to leave school. Surprise surprise our heroine Tsukushi is given a red card and fights back against the F4. Love triangles and conflict ensues between this excellent cast of characters. **ps: I love Rui :)
Hot Blooded Woman: shoujo, romance, action, comedy (24 volumes)

This is actually a korean manwha i think and its very funny! I loved reading this it really sucks you in and you can't stop reading it. It can get pretty violent at times for shoujo but the characters are just so cool. It centres around Ha Ji a girl who likes fighting and is known as the leader of the gang Doberman. Early on she is in an accident and her soul ends up switching bodies witha beautiful and very feminine body and she must now live as the quiet loner Aram Han and her adventures begin. The artwork is very pretty I love how Han Seo and Sin Uuo are drawn. I really recommend this manga for those looking for something with a little more bite then the cutesy type of shoujo manga.
Kimi Kara no Resume: romance, drama, older audience (21 volumes)

Ok I rated this for older audiences as it has sexual situations and themes as its about a workplace and relationships of adults. I didn't think it was smutty though?? Kaoru is a young office lady who idolises her boss, Kashiwabara. The two become a couple who must keep the relationship a secret. This manga has a strong theme of the struggle of women in the work place. (Its an older manga and I don't know what its like in Japan these days but its much easier for women in Australia these days). The story is actually really nice the only reason I gave this a poor rating is I didn't really like the artwork, its not very detailed and I think the characters are drawn a little funny.
Marmalade Boy: shoujo, romance, comedy (8 volumes)

Its lighthearted, funny and very cute. The characters are quirky and interesting and the art is beautiful. The main character Miki finds out her parents are not only divorcing but switching partners with another couple. The twist is the two couples with switched partners are now moving in together and have a son the same age as Miki, Yuu who will be going to the same school as Miki. Its extremely cute as Miki is against the idea at first and tries to hide it from everyone at school. Entertaining love triangles are formed and the best thing of all in my opinion is the story has a happy ending :)
Mondoumuyou: shoujo, mystery, romance (2 volumes)

Touko's house is broken into late at night with one difference, she recognises the thief as Ichisaie a popular boy from her class. She gets pulled into his mysterious world as she tries to find out what he was doing and discovers she has feelings for him. This is a really sweet, interesting manga from one of my favourite scanlation groups. Its not very long, only 2 volumes, but its different from the usual high school shoujo's so its worth giving it a try. The artwork is very nice too, I like how Ichisaie is drawn :)
Mucha Kucha Daisuki : shoujo, drama, romance (4 volumes)

This is so sad and cute. Katagiri Aoi a country girl hates everything to do with Tokyo then finds out she's moving to Tokyo :) Soon after finding this out she meets Sugita Tsuyoshi a boy from Tokyo who steals a kiss, she instantly falls in love with him and joins his school and class when she gets to Tokyo. A love triangle is formed when Aoi's childhood friend Hieta arrives. Is very cute and funny how Aoi tries to become more cool like a Tokyo girl to impress Tsuyoshi. I would recommend reading this as a slightly more emotional shoujo manga.
